Britain’s elite athletes are now voting for their June 2023 Athlete of the Month, facilitated by the British Elite Athletes Association.Five athletes have been nominated for the award after achieving personal triumphs over the last few weeks, and one will be chosen as the winner by their peers on World Class Programmes. This month’s shortlist is dominated by those who’ve managed particularly notable competitive successes, and comprises: Caden Cunningham (taekwondo), Ben Cutmore and Matthew Dixon jointly (diving), Zharnel Hughes (athletics) and Laura Roper (hockey).Cunningham, 20, prepared for his first European Games shortly after returning from injury, but overcame the occasion to win the men's +87kg taekwondo event: the perfect debut.Cutmore and Dixon are the first joint-nominees for Athletes’ Athlete of the Month, and were selected after scooping Men’s Platform Synchro bronze in Kraków despite being first paired just weeks before. Cutmore said the success followed “really tough” national championships in the run-up to the European Games.Hughes made history when he broke the 30-year British 100m record with a time of 9.83s, knocking 0.04s off Linford Christie’s longstanding marker. He shared that he had written his time down pre-race alongside the words ‘Have faith’, and said afterwards: “Manifestation is real!” – a lesson to any athlete. Finally, Roper reached her 150th cap for Great Britain – becoming just the second female player in history to hit the milestone. She helped to secure victory on Britain’s final Pro League match with a strong personal performance.Elite athletes can vote for their Athlete of the Month now by heading to their latest BEAA email, with the winner to be confirmed across the BEAA’s website and social media channels shortly.Good luck to everyone shortlisted!
