Gymnast Jake Jarman has been named Athletes’ Athlete of the Month for October 2023 by his peers on the World Class Programme.At just 21-years-old Jake made history when he became the first Brit to be crowned world vault champion following the 2023 artistic gymnastics World Championships in Antwerp.He landed the Yonekura and the Dragulescu vaults in the final to seal gold, both of which were significantly more challenging than those his competitors attempted.But it wasn’t all plane sailing: the week before, Jake’s place in the final appeared at risk following a fall during the qualifying rounds. However his vaults were so difficult that he progressed regardless, and he more than took his opportunity to make British gymnastics history.Speaking afterwards, Jake said: “It doesn’t feel real. To call myself World Champion, I can’t believe it. I was definitely nervous but as soon as I landed the first vault instantly I calmed down. I’m super proud to be able to perform the way I did; it gives me a huge confidence boost, especially heading into next year… To know that I can do that in a high-pressure environment and to really enjoy myself while doing it is massive for me.”His accomplishment topped a poll among elite British athletes to decide who on the World Class Programme deserved most recognition for their successes last month.The gymnast led a nominee list comprised of Vicky Holland (triathlon) and Fynn Sterritt (sailing), both of whom also enjoyed personally impressive months.The Athletes’ Athlete of the Month award is given to elite British sportspeople by the BEAA for their achievements in competition or elsewhere, such as personal development, inspiring comebacks, charity work, awareness raising and more.It celebrates successes across elite British sport, and commends more than just competitive accomplishment – with every winner decided by the athlete community.Thank you to every athlete who voted, and congratulations to Jake for winning, as well as to Vicky and Fynn for their nominations.Elite British athletes, to cast your vote next time, keep an eye on your emails from the BEAA!
